Alright everyone… Grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this blog post!
This Mayflower Hotel wedding was a very important one for Alisa and me. If you’ve been following Modern Frames Photography on Instagram and Facebook, then you may already know quite a bit about these two awesome humans. We first met Mishale in July of 2016 when we photographed the surprise proposal of their friends, Rita and Krshna. Soon after, I received a call from Niraj saying that he really liked the photos and–guess what!–he was planning to propose to HIS girlfriend and wanted Modern Frames to capture it! So a few months later, I went out to Big Cork Vineyards to shoot another exciting surprise proposal and got to see some familiar faces. 🙂
That is the very abridged version of how we met, now let’s talk allllll about this wedding! Fast-forward a few months again to a February Bridal Show we were at (Marry Me, Bethesda!) and in come Mishale and Niraj! [Sidenote: one of Alisa’s best friends in the world had just gotten engaged and was also at our booth the moment Mishale and Niraj showed up. Anna (the recently engaged friend) recognized them from the proposal photos we shared and jumped on them in congratulations! And even crazier, Anna’s now husband Ben actually ended up being our third shooter for the wedding!] Okay, back on track. We talked about all the fun festivities and how Mishale and Niraj’s wedding was coming together. A few weeks later, I get word that they have booked a venue (the GORGEOUS Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC), and it was time to talk photographers. A few cups of tea and a lot of laughs later, Modern Frames Photography was booked for Mishale and Niraj’s wedding weekend!
You may also remember seeing their official engagement ceremony several months back, as well their gorgeous engagement photos from September. So by the time their wedding weekend rolled around, I felt like I was photographing friends! I got to spend pretty much all week with these two lovely and amazing people. Day 1: I showed up to Mishale’s house for her mehndi, done by crazy-talented henna artiste, Bhavna Naik! Day 2: Mishale’s pre-wedding ceremonies and, later that night, the mehndi party. Day 3: Niraj’s pre-wedding ceremonies (he got the pithi – yellow paste a BIT heavier than Mishale…). Then came day 4: The Wedding at the Mayflower!
We showed up at 6am (yup–6am…) ready for action! Mishale was all but done and ready for the first look. Niraj was–mostly–awake. They exchanged little notes with each other and the tears for the day had already started. Niraj’s Baraat was full of fun, happiness, and AMAZING DANCE MOVES. And it didn’t stop there. Every event was soooooo much fun: the beautiful ceremony, traditional prayers and events, dancing, toasts, dancing, more toasts, dancing, and of course, DANCING!
It is something really special for me when I get to see the same people over and over and get to know the bridal party, the families, the siblings, the parents, the uncles, family friends, etc. so by the time the wedding day rolls around, we really feel like part of the family. Alisa and I both choked up during the emotional parts of the day. We are so honored, humbled, and thrilled to be trusted to photograph Mishale and Niraj’s wedding day and tell the whole story–from the first ring to the second! And now (if you haven’t already started scrolling) take a look at a few moments from that magical day!
